Senior Consulting Partner

Scott Matthews holds Bachelor of Arts and Master of Architecture degrees from the University of California at Berkeley, where his studies stressed energy and climate-related issues, with a special emphasis on design for daylighting. Prior to joining the firm in 1986, he was a partner in the firm of Van der Ryn, Calthorpe & Matthews, with Principal Responsibility for energy and daylighting design consulting activities.

Mr. Matthews has published articles on daylighting in professional journals and has given seminars and presented papers at the annual conventions and conferences held by several professional societies. He has taught daylighting design in Berkeley’s Department of Architecture and in the Illuminating Engineering Society’s Summer Workshops for Teachers of Lighting. He has also served as Research Consultant to the Department of Energy’s Windows and Daylighting Program at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. As a result of the innovative nature of his work, Mr. Matthews was awarded a Loeb Fellowship in Advanced Environmental Studies at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design.

Acting as Principal for the firm, Mr. Matthews has completed well over one hundred projects, ranging in scale from individual houses to large-scale and extremely complex multi-use facilities, airport terminals and office towers. Within this range, he has acted as lighting designer most often for three project groups: performing arts venues, museums and academic facilities. Within the latter group, the project types have ranged in scope from the adaptive restoration of existing theaters to large research laboratories for major research universities. Almost all of the firm’s current projects are designed to qualify for LEED certification, some at the Gold or Platinum level. Mr. Matthews is therefore able to use his career emphasis on sustainable design to ensure that their lighting systems have state-of-the-art performance as well as architectural and visual quality.

He is a member of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IES), and served on its Energy Management Committee and on the non-residential energy design standards writing committee of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (SSPC 90.1). He is also a member of the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) and held Lighting Certification by the National Council on Qualifications for The Lighting Professions. Mr. Matthews holds Architectural Registration in California.
